A Year At University
Next week I will finish my first year at university, and I didn't think that I would say this but I will really miss it. Although university is a lot of work and responsibility, it is also a lot of fun with great opportunities to meet people and learn about yourself. In this week's post, I wanted to share my tips to flourish in your first year.
1. FriendshipsA lot of people say before you start university that friendships change or "you won't stay friends with who you meet in freshers". For me that was true- I distanced myself from my freshers' friends, however, that allowed me to develop other friendships which I started in the first term. It's nice to have people to rely on during this big transition, however, remember not to become dependent because you can miss out on other relationships. Stay open to change and allow yourself to explore friendships.
2. Join All the Clubs and Societies
Freshers year is the opportunity to trial and test new things- Student Union is a great way to do that. At reasonable prices, you can join clubs and meet new people who have similar interests. If you used to dance, try it again or if you have always wanted to be able to surf- try it out!
3. Ask for Guidance
The first year can be tough- it may be the first time away from home and there are a lot of things that come with independence. Whether that's university work or house chores- there are many resources available and make sure to ask for the help you need.
4. Do the Work
Even though everyone says that the first year doesn't count, it is important to get your work done to show your lecturers that you are committed to the course (you will be with them for 3 years). Getting your work done on time is important for the course leader but it also helps you learn what areas you need to improve for next year.
5. Don't Panic
At times university will feel like a lot but remember not to panic. Although I said that it's important to get your work done on time, it is also just the first year and your lecturers will understand that you are still learning.
Overall, make sure to look after your mental and physical health over everything else because it will determine how enjoyable your university experience is.
Love, Aria
