GAP YEAR Planning
This year I am taking a year off from education to travel around the world to visit the countries I have always wanted to visit. I believe it is so important to take this year off because it allows you to experience new cultures and ultimately become a more open and adventurous persons.
Although travelling is lots of fun, there is also a lot of preparation needed to ensure a safe and well planned trip. In this week’s post, I wanted to help anyone else who plans to prepare for their year off. This check list I made is to inspire and give ideas to anyone who needs help me with the up coming year.
1. Jobs
Firstly, it’s important in order to travel that you earn enough money to efficiently go abroad without running out of money within the first week. Make sure to make the most of the upcoming months and work hard to make some money. So send out some CV to a couple places you are interested in and try and get some long hour shifts as it may be hard but it will be worth it!
2. Internships
If you aren’t interested in travelling the whole year maybe look at some internships that you may be helpful for your future career. This will boost your CV and make you more prepared for your university course.
3. Driving theory and exam
This is the perfect time to get your driving license in time for the following year- whether it’s for work or university.
Check out this website for some opportunities to work in another country. This is a great opportunity to live in another country and make some money along the way.
5. Learn a Language
This year is a great time to learn a language, whether you go abroad to learn within the country or you find lessons around your local area. Learning a language takes time, this year makes the perfect opportunity to focus your energy into a new language.
6. International citizen service
This is another website which allows you to visit other countries in a volunteering group. Volunteering helps you build up your CV and help communities that are not as developed.
7. Interrailing
Interrailing is an experience of a lifetime, it is an opportunity which allows you to get on trains and staying in hostels all around Europe for reasonable pricing. It can also be done on your own terms with up to a year of travelling.
8. Auparied
This is a different way of experiencing a country, while still making money. Working with a family abroad broadens your cultural awareness and helps you explore another country.
9. Blogging, YouTube or Podcasts
If you have ever wanted to start your own social media page, this gives you a great opportunity. Starting an account to share your experiences of your travels will give you a platform that others can enjoy.
If you are planning to travel this year, here is some other things to consider before booking a flight…
10. Emergency fund
It’s important to be safe and reasonable with your money. You never know when you will get into a bad situation, therefore it’s a good idea to bring an emergency fund in case anything goes wrong or you are desperate for cash.
11. Packing
Before travelling don’t forget to pack efficiently with a few clothes and products. Remember that you will always find items where ever you travel too which means you must always keep space in your bag. Which reminds me- find time to pick the right travel rucksack for your adventures.
12. Vaccines
Some countries need proof of vaccinations before entering their country, whereas others just recommend. Make sure to check out the NHS website to check you have all the right up to date vaccinations.
13. Visas
As well as vaccinations, it’s important to check for visas. Some countries allow you to come into their country without a visa for a certain number of days so be sure to check their website out before buying a ticket.
14. Travel insurance
Although this isn’t a necessary item for your travels, it is highly recommended for all travellers. This means that if anything happened your insurance would cover any problems and you wouldn’t be left with thousands of bills at the end of your travels. There are hundreds of insurance companies to choose from so make sure to research before committing to a company.
