Advice from a 6th Former
As school is coming to an end for me I thought I would share some wisdom from my years at boarding school. As someone with dyslexia and dyscalculia, I initially found school very difficult and wasn't a place I thought I would be able to flourish in, however, through my experiences and guidance, the school finally became somewhere to be enjoyed. I want to share the advice collected from these experiences to help make these the best few years of school, as well as, advice that will carry you throughout your career.
1. Work hard from the start
Something I learnt from my time at school is; if something doesn't come easily/ naturally, don't be disheartened- keep pushing! Teachers' opinion matters- your work from the beginning will be a judging factor for them so make sure to show them that you are willing to work hard and receive good grades.
It's important to make sure not to compare your work with others if you're working hard and your friends' arent but still receive higher grades- that's ok! Keep working hard and you will be rewarded in your own time- letters/ numbers mean nothing if they are not earned.
2. Set goals
I find setting goals helps me strive to work harder by pushing myself to achieve the goal. Don't set a goal that is unattainable but something that is in arms reach. If you are currently working at a grade C, then push yourself to get a C+, and then towards a B. This will keep you constantly motivated and will allow you to celebrate the little victories.
3. Take advice from your teachers
This seems obvious, however, is often not used by students. Teachers are there to guide and help you throughout your time at school. Make the most of their knowledge and experience to help you in areas that you are struggling with.
If you don't feel confident enough to approach the teacher in the class, try sending an email and set up a time for a one to one chat.
4. Enjoy being with friends
School is for your education but it is also for you to enjoy- make sure to make time for your friends. I love to catch up with friends at mealtimes or for an afternoon walk. This is a great time to also rest your mind from work which is essential in order to keep you motivated.
5. Make the most of the opportunity
School is an opportunity to get involved with many activities and extra curriculum. As well as being helpful for university, it is also allowed to explore your passions and meet new people. Don't go just because your friends are going- go because you want to. Maybe you'll instantly find something that interests you or maybe you will need to keep exploring, however long, school is the perfect place for these experiences.
6. Remember it's only school!
Lastly, remember that school isn't everyone's place so don't be dishearted- you will have your time to flourish! Keep going and make the most of the time you have.
Love, Aria
